Pilot Room Execution – Petit Palace Hotel

Project Objective

The main objective of the project was the execution of a pilot room for the Petit Palace Hotel, located in the historic centre of Palma de Mallorca. This room was designed to serve as the reference model for the future refurbishment of the remaining hotel rooms, allowing the design, selected materials, finishes, building services and construction methods to be evaluated before the full renovation commenced. This phase provided the opportunity to assess the technical feasibility of the project and evaluate the final result under real operating conditions, enabling informed decisions before rolling out the refurbishment across the hotel.

Project Outcome

The pilot room was successfully completed in accordance with the design developed by the project team and met the quality standards established by the hotel ownership. Its primary purpose was to serve as a full-scale prototype, allowing the design to be tested in real conditions before the refurbishment of the remaining rooms. During this stage, it was possible to evaluate the functionality of the space, the performance of the selected materials and the integration of all building systems. The pilot also highlighted opportunities for improvement regarding furniture layouts, room functionality and selected finishes, leading to design adjustments that enhanced both usability and the overall sense of space. This validation process allowed the project team to optimise the final design before full implementation, reducing construction risks, avoiding costly modifications during later stages and establishing a reliable benchmark for the refurbishment of the remaining rooms.

Pilot Room Execution – Petit Palace Hotel

My Role in the Project

As Project Manager, I was responsible for the overall coordination and management of the pilot room execution, acting as the main link between the client, the design team, the hotel management, the main contractor, specialist subcontractors and suppliers. I participated in the preliminary coordination meetings with the interior designers and the hotel project representatives, ensuring that all technical, functional and aesthetic requirements were clearly defined before construction started. Throughout the construction phase, I supervised the daily progress of the works, coordinated all involved parties and ensured that quality standards, programme requirements and project objectives were consistently achieved.

Responsibilities & Deliverables

As Project Manager, I was responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising the complete execution of the pilot room while ensuring compliance with the agreed quality standards, project schedule and budget. My main responsibilities included:

  • Planning and coordinating the overall execution of the pilot room.
  • Coordinating the client, design team, contractor and specialist subcontractors.
  • Supervising construction works to ensure quality, programme and technical compliance.
  • Monitoring costs, programme performance and resolving technical issues throughout construction.
  • Coordinating material deliveries, project documentation and the final inspection prior to handover.

Added Value

The pilot room played a key role in validating the refurbishment concept before the full hotel renovation began, providing the ownership and design team with a realistic assessment of the final product. This phase allowed improvements to be introduced to furniture layouts, finishes and construction details, enhancing functionality while establishing consistent execution standards for the remaining rooms. By coordinating all project stakeholders throughout this process, informed decisions could be made based on real construction experience, reducing project risks, improving efficiency and optimising the subsequent refurbishment phases.

Conclusion

The execution of the pilot room represented a strategic milestone within the Petit Palace Hotel refurbishment project. Beyond delivering a high-quality room, this phase provided the opportunity to validate the proposed design under real conditions, identify improvement opportunities and optimise the final solution before extending the refurbishment throughout the hotel. As Project Manager, my role was to coordinate every stage of this process, ensuring effective communication between the client, designers, contractors and suppliers while providing the project with a solid and fully validated foundation for the next phases of construction.
